Barton 29th March 2008 - John Simper |
Fossils were found in very large numbers, just took the best home, some fantasicly well preseved large sharks teeth were found in the slippages, with those found on the beach usually rather worn. A few weeks ago my brother and I found a person trapped in the mud and a full scale rescue operation involving 40 emergancy service personel was lunched (was in most of the national papers!). I cannot stress how careful you need to be if you intend to go onto the slippages, never go alone and bring a stick to test the mud! Do not go in wet conditions. |

Barton Beds, 4 July |
Plenty of material in the sections below Barton on Sea. Found about 20 mollusc species, hundreds of individuals, more than I wanted to carry so kept only the best examples of each type. Based on this trip I'd recommend visiting after (or even during!) prolonged rain as the shells are beautifully exposed on the clay surface. |

Barton Feb 2004 |
The beach was not closed but the cliff faces were, we climbed cautiously a few meters, but it was very muddy and boot-swallowing. Seemed to be few fossils on the faces anyway. Best spots were on the open beach. No sharks teeth, lots of spirals, one person had a disk from a fish spine the size of a penny. From two hours fossilling I wouldn't rate Barton/Highcliff very highly. Had a nice tea in High Cliffe castle. |
