Where to look for Fossils Barton?

(Collecting Shells from the foreshore) - 2001

The best place to look is by walking along the beach by the slippages. Fossils can be found on the foreshore and at the base of the cliff. After high and scouring tides, often shells can be found simply on the foreshore.

Extreme care should be taken if planning on searching the slippages, although often good shells can be found particularly after heavy rain, it is easy to become stuck and it can also be life threatening too. If you do plan to explore the slippages, make sure someone else is with you and walk carefully ensuring that you tread on hard ground.

At the West end of Barton cliffs, just near the sea defense where you access the beach via the Highcliff route. Sharks teeth are often washed out of this bed and lay scattered across the beach in the sand and single. This bed continues upwards at Highcliff to the middle of the cliff, though these are quite poorly slipped and do not usually contain fresh slippages or falls due to the defense. It is best to arrive on a fairly high tide and stay until the tide retreats as sharks teeth can be found for quite some way out laying on the sand around this area. Some of the fish pieces can be found in flints in this same area. However the sea needs to be washing this section out for it to yield new material.
